Timetables: Fall 2023, Winter 2024

No doubt but magic may do much in this;
For he that reads but mathematic rules
Shall find conclusions that avail to work
Wonders that pass the common sense of men.

From Friar Bacon and Friar Bungay by Robert Greene.

Teaching

Teaching is the part of the job that turns me on. I like to teach everything in mathematics that I know enough about, and often give reading courses on topics not covered in our regular offerings.

Fall 2023

Mathematics 1110H - Calculus I: Limits, Derivatives, and Integrals
Mathematics 2120H - Calculus IV: Vector Calculus [reading course]
Mathematics 2200H - Mathematical Reasoning
Mathematics 3830H - A Survey of the History of Mathematics [reading course]
Mathematics 3901H - Reading Course in Set Theory
Mathematics 4903H - Reading Course in Mathematical Logic

Winter 2024

Mathematics 1120H - Calculus II: Integrals and Series
Mathematics 2260H - Geometry I: Euclidean Geometry
Mathematics 3770H - Complex Analysis [Winter 2022]

Archive pages for courses I have taught in recent years:

These pages have links to handouts, assignments, quizzes, tests, and exams for these courses, including previous iterations I taught, in some cases with solutions. Reading courses and fourth-year courses, except MATH-COIS 4215H, are not included because I do not usually archive web pages for them.

Reading courses

I often teach reading courses. In some cases these are regular courses for students who are unable to take them when they are offered in the normal course of events, need them to graduate, or the like, in other cases they are on material outside our usual curriculum. Please note that the availability of reading courses may be limited by students' backgrounds, my background, the time and energy I have to spare, and approval by higher authorities.

Recent regular courses as reading courses:
Mathematics 1350H - Linear Algebra I: Matrix Algebra [Fall 2022]
Mathematics 1550H - Introduction to Probability [Fall 2019]
Mathematics 2110H - Calculus III: Calculus of Several Variables [Summer 2023]
Mathematics 2120H - Calculus IV: Vector Calculus [Fall 2023]
Mathematics 2200H - Mathematical Reasoning [Summer 2017]
Mathematics 2350H - Linear algebra II: Vector Spaces [Summer 2021]

Research

My interests are in combinatorial set theory, particularly problems about Souslin trees, and in geometry, on non-Desarguesian projective planes. I've also worked a bit on binary codes.

Background

Born a Canadian citizen in München, Deutschland, in 1961, and raised in Toronto, Canada, from 1962 on, except for a year (1971-72) in Innsbruck, Österreich. B.Sc. (1984), University of Toronto; A.M. (1986), Ph.D. (1989), Dartmouth College. NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship: 1989-90 at the University of California, Berkeley, and 1990-91 at the University of Toronto. Assistant Professor at Trent University 1991-98 (with tenure from 1995); Associate Professor from 1998. Visiting Adjunct Assistant Professor at Ohio University while on sabbatical in 1995-96.
